Kata Competition Rules

The Kata competition is divided into 6 classes:

1. Nage-no-Kata, 3 series. Tori(SN-judoka), Uke(mainstream) Level 1, 2 en 3
2. Nage-no-Kata, 3 series. Tori(SN-judoka), Uke(SN-judoka) Level 1, 2 en 3
3. Katame-No-Kata, 3 series Tori(SN-judoka), Uke(mainstream) Level 1, 2 en 3
4. Katame-No-Kata, 3 series Tori((SN-judoka), Uke(SN-judoka) Level 1, 2 en 3
5. Open Category ( bijv. Ju-no Kata, Go-no-sen etc. ) Tori(SN-judoka), Uke(mainstream) Level 1
6. Try-out Class Tori(SN-judoka), Uke(mainstream) Level 4

Classes:

Classes 1 en 2

The Nage-No-Kata ( first 3 series) has to be performed like normal. If adjustments are necessary( for instance, when the judoka misses a physical skill to perform the technique normally), this has to be reported in writing with the Kata-judges. Also, there has to be an alternative technique and this of course has to be a correct one based on the essence of the Kata and on the physical ability of the judoka.

Classes 3 en 4

The Katame-No-Kata  has to be performed like normal. If adjustments are necessary( for instance, when the judoka misses a physical skill to perform the technique normally), this has to be reported in writing with the Kata-judges. Also, there has to be an alternative technique and this of course has to be a correct one based on the essence of the Kata and on the physical ability of the judoka.

Class 5

The Katame-No-Kata  has to be performed like normal. If adjustments are necessary( for instance, when the judoka misses a physical skill to perform the technique normally), this has to be reported in writing with the Kata-judges. Also there has to be an alternative technique and this of course has to be a correct one based on the essence of the Kata and on the physical ability of the judoka.

Class 6

The judoka reports in writing to the Kata-judges the techniques he/she will perform. There have to be at least 6 techniques. It is required to perform official Kata opening and ending.

Kata’s has to be demonstrated “Normally as possible and adjusted where needed”. Therefore some throws will have to be adjusted to the judoka. For instance Kata-Guruma, some judoka will have to perform it on one knee or even roll with the throw.
Same goes for the scoring of points. If there is a throw that isn’t correct with the physical ability of the judoka and is NOT adjusted to the physical ability , this will score low on points.(For instance, a judoka with severe CP and therefore very instable qua balance, when he makes ippon-seoi-nage and Uke has to hold him steady after the throw is not correct, because it is not logical/normal. What is correct is when Tori rolls with the throw, because this is a natural thing for this judoka and his mobility.)

Uke may advice during the Kata and will not be judged.

Levels:

1. A judoka who has light social, very light mental retardation or very light physical disability. The judoka has a very good judofeeling and knows what he is doing and how to go about his disability. Comparable learning ability as a mainstream judoka.
2. A judoka who has light mental and/or physical disability. Judoka has a good judofeeling and with a little help knows what he has to do and how to cope with his disability. With a little adjustment he can train with mainstream judoka.
3. A judoka who has mental and/or physical disability. Judoka has a average judofeeling but needs help in understanding what he has to do and perform even during competition. With  a lot of adjustment he is capable of training with mainstream judoka.
4. A judoka with severe mental and /or physical disability. Judoka has little to none judofeeling and needs a lot of guidance during training and competition. Is not capable of training with mainstream judoka.

For all Classes Uke has a very important role. Uke is mainstream judoka/trainer or Special needs judoka.
All classes have first, second and third places.

Kata competition is a team sport, for instance :
Jack(Tori) Jill(Uke) is 1 team nage-no-kata, so they cannot enter again with Jill(Tori) and Jack(Uke) in nage-no-kata. But they can team up again in katame-no-kata.
